Projects & Cycles

Projects are the top-level container and map to GitHub repositories. Cycles are the work unit, taking up to 3 roadmap features through plan, build, review and document.

Purpose

Projects in Bynary map to GitHub repositories. They hold what the AI needs to build effectively: architecture docs, the roadmap, decisions, personas and infrastructure choices. Cycles are the core work unit, taking a small set of features from plan to pull request through a structured workflow.

Why We Built This

The project and cycle model gives teams a clear structure for iterative delivery. Work is organised into focused cycles with defined scope and evidence for each step.

  • •Institutional memory — Context from previous cycles and your architecture docs carries forward
  • •Scope management — A cap of 3 features per cycle keeps delivery focused and reviewable
  • •Full traceability — Every feature and task traces from the roadmap through to the pull request

Working with Projects
1

Create a Project

Click New Project and create a new Next.js app or connect an existing GitHub repository. For existing repos, Bynary analyses the codebase, writes architecture docs, adds discovered features to the roadmap and extracts your existing design system.
2

Start a Cycle

Cycles are started from the roadmap, not the dashboard. Click Start Cycle, review the AI's recommended features and suggested name, check the estimate and confirm.
3

Navigate the Dashboard

The project dashboard shows your active cycle, completed cycles and links to the roadmap, analytics, architecture docs and settings. The sidebar tree provides quick navigation.

Key Features

Pre-cycle Cost Estimate

The Start Cycle dialog shows estimated duration, tokens and cost, sized against your last 5 completed cycles. Estimates are compared with actuals on completion.

Cycle Lifecycle

Each cycle follows Planning → Building → Review → Documentation (optional) → Completed. You can view earlier phases read-only, rewind to them, or scrap the cycle.

Architecture Docs

A living, AI-maintained set of docs describing your codebase, browsable in the app and used as context by the AI.

Knowledge Map

A tree from project to cycle, feature, task and artifact, showing which files and functions each task touched.

Decision Log

Architectural and infrastructure decisions recorded with their rationale.

Infrastructure Decisions

Track active, superseded and removed infrastructure choices across cycles.

Sync to Main

A background job detects when your default branch has moved ahead in a way that conflicts with the cycle's branch, and offers a one-click rebase.

Notifications and Audit Log

An in-app bell surfaces team events, such as reviewer assignments and sync conflicts. Every mutation is recorded in the audit log.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run more than one cycle at once?

The roadmap's Start Cycle button is disabled while the project already has a cycle in progress, so finish or scrap the current cycle first.

What happens when I rewind a cycle?

Rewinding takes the cycle back to an earlier phase and cleans up data from later phases. A confirmation dialog shows what will be affected before you confirm.

Can I scrap a cycle?

Yes, at any point before completion. The cycle is kept for history but can't be resumed, and its features return to the roadmap's Now lane.

How do the architecture docs work?

When you connect an existing repo, Bynary's analysis writes one document per feature area plus an index. They are used in planning and kept up to date as the codebase changes.

What is the sidebar tree?

A hierarchical tree of your teams, projects, cycles, features and tasks. Expand a node or click to go straight to it.

Current Considerations

We've thought carefully about these areas. Some are intentional design choices, others are on our roadmap.

Next.js projects only

Project setup and build infrastructure are designed for Next.js (App Router) and TypeScript.

One cycle at a time from the roadmap

Start Cycle is unavailable while another cycle on the project is in progress.

Up to 3 features per cycle

Larger pieces of work should be split across several cycles.
